Dead Man's Chest has come... and it was awesome

To start off, I went into Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest expecting it to be a setup for the next movie; maybe that's why I liked it so much because I wasn't expecting it to be a stand-alone movie. It compares to a lot of the other 'middle' films in a trilogy: Back to the Future, The Matrix, Mission Impossible, even Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. It certainly isn't better than the first (and I'm pretty sure the 3rd Pirates will be great), but it isn't horrible.

The plot to Pirates is a little convoluted at first, what with three (or some may argue four) story lines converging into one by the end of the movie. First off there is Cap'n Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who finds out by an old friend that his soul is now wanted by Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), Sparrow sets out to stop that from happening. The second is that Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) have been imprisoned and are given a deal, steal Jack's compass for their freedom. These are about the only story lines I can tell you without ruining much of the film, but the other ones deal with some pretty hefty characters.

This Pirates film has all the same qualities as the first, if not a little watered down, particularly Bloom and Knightley's chemistry doesn't seem to be on par with the Black Pearl. But the non-stop action almost makes up for this has they really don't have time to talk to each other. The only major complaint I have is that one set of scenes don't really seem like they belong, they don't add to the movie and are kind of filler until the last battles. I'm talking about the Cannibal Island, granted the scenes are rather funny and exciting but the film really could have done without them and it wouldn't have hurt the overall story. I can't complain too much after that, but it just doesn't have the same freshness the first did. I will remind you though that this movie is merely a setup for the third so don't expect a hasty resolution.
