The answer, to me, is yes- a good show is a good show even if it doesn't fit neatly into arbitrary genre categories. The best comedy in a given season may not necessarily be the funniest.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

LOST, DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Where the hell were these shows?! LOST should've been up there for sure, especially if HEROES made it in (I really like Heroes and all but it's basically an unintelligent LOST offspring with 2d characters and bad dialogue). Lost had its best season with some of the most emotional and darkest stuff the series has ever hit and it continually takes a risk and moves into bolder and newer territory unlike a lot of other shows. I mean, where was ELIZABETH MITCHELL's nomination for chrissake.

Dexter should've been nominated for Best Actor at the very least. Let's not get started on Friday Night Lights. And everything I've heard about THE WIRE sounds like it's a travesty on that end as well that it had a non-presence at the Emmys.

For the people raging on about Veronica Mars - I dig Veronica Mars and all as well but it hasn't ever come close to its great first season. And no matter how much I like it, I recognize that its production quality is actually kind of subpar compared to a lot of these shows - while its dialogue can be witty, the acting on the show is generally second-tier (except for maybe Kristen Bell and Enrico Colantoni) and the pacing of the show is often awful. I mean, that episode with the people doing graffiti on the immigrant's restaurant and the PSA-style storyline about underage drinking? TERRIBLE. Like so bad that I had to scan through the episode to get through it rather than actually watch most of it.

Oh I'm mildly happy about Entourage being nominated but I mean, S3 was not even a great season for it so...overall, the Emmys suck.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

Grey's Anatomy, original? Psh. Doctor/hospital shows where they focus more on the doctors and their lives have been around for quite a while. The only variation on the formula there is that it's been injected with a huge dose of estrogen.

Typical of a woman (you sexist pig, you!) to prefer a show like that.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

Why doesn't anyone understand the difference between "couldn't care less" and "could care less?" The thing you need to take into account is not everyone likes what you like. And just as you are, they are not voting on what is good but what they like.

If the emmy committee and the viewers would come to understand what constitutes a good performance or a good show the quality of television might actually improve. But since the only difference between you and them is money when it comes to your understanding of the medium, I can't see that happening any time soon.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

No Scrubs or Battlestar Galactica (or Edward James Olmos for that matter), not interested.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

Agree with most comments. For one thing, LOST should have been nominated, but since the voters only look at one episode, that hurts since LOST's story is more complex than most TV shows put together. But even still, the Emmys should have just listened to the general consensus that the Season 3 finale was one of the best LOST episodes of all time, and just nominated it on faith. Grey's IS overrated, it's a Scrubs clone, only they take out all the great stuff that made Scrubs a brilliant show. Sopranos had its weakest season, not sure why it was nominated, but I guess the Emmys like the old veterans. Heroes is good, but it isn't quite Best Drama category yet. It's got a good story, and a few good developed characters, but the others (Nikki, D.L., Simone, Matt, etc.) need more development.
As for animated shows, Avatar IS a good show with a surprisingly good story and easily the best show Nickelodeon has seen in a LONG time. I've heard the last two Simpsons seasons have been better, but I haven't watched them, so no comment. At least Family Guy wasn't nominated, I liked Seasons 1-4, but Season 5 has been lame.

Comment on Emmy Nominations Rant

Pretty much agree, but you don't like Southpark? The first half of this season and pretty much all of last season had arguably some of the best episodes in the history of the show! Other than that, interesting discussion.
